Writer's Block: A Selected Annotated Bibliography

Mack, Karin, and Eric Skjei. Overcoming Writing Blocks. Los Angeles: J.P. Tarcher, l979.

This book examines the causes of writer's block and offers practical suggestions for overcoming it in all stages of the writing process. It also includes a chapter on overcoming blocking in technical, academic and professional writing.

Palo, Susan. How to Avoid Writer's Block and Procrastination on Long Papers. UCD Campus Writing Center.

This pamphlet works from the assumption that writer's block is "any writing difficulty which impedes a writer's steady progress toward completing a writing project." It diagnoses common causes of writer's block and offers remedies to treat the problem in its various manifestations. Anyone who suffers from writer's block should find this concise yet thorough pamphlet a valuable resource.

Sternberg, David. "Down in the Dissertation Dumps: How to Get Out." How to Complete and Survive a Doctoral Dissertation. New York: St. Martins, l98l.

This chapter in Sternberg's longer work classifies dissertation anxieties and depressions and evaluates several ways to cope with them. It argues that careful planning and external support are the keys to avoiding such psychological disturbances and offers useful advice about how to form and sustain dissertation-support groups. Although Sternberg does not address writer's block directly, his advice about how to maintain sanity during the dissertation-writing process should be useful to the blocked writer.
