Advantages of Writing Partnerships

  1.
  2. Offer support, encourage an exchange of ideas, enrich the learning experience, contribute to a sense of belonging and relatedness.

  3. Enhance writing skills:
    •
    • Reinforce the idea that writing is a process

    • Allow writers to separate the creator from the editor, to use writing to discover ideas as well as to communicate them

    • Encourage writers to set deadlines and to abide by them

    • Increase audience awareness, help writers move from writer-based to reader-based prose

    • Allow a group of writers to pool their resources, to draw on the different strengths of each writer

  4. Contribute to Professional Development
    •
    • Help prepare students for the writing they will do as future professionals

    • Develop writing and critiquing skills that will make graduate students better advisors in the future

    • Increase networking and collaborative skills

    • Provide a structure that can be translated into thesis, dissertation, or article writing groups in the future

  5. Decrease dependency on advisors and "experts." Encourage students to become their own teachers and editors. Boosts confidence
